a2ruAcademic Metrics

About

A task-oriented working group with a public research record.

Academic Metrics is an a2ru Working Group. It was established in 2024 to carry forward conversations and roundtables that a2ru and the International Council of Fine Arts Deans held from 2020 to 2023.

Mission

The group brings together academic leaders from a2ru and beyond — deans, chairs, associate deans, and faculty — around a shared research and action strategy. The public charge is to develop ways of making the intellectual and creative contributions of arts- and design-based faculty legible in research universities, where current models such as Academic Analytics represent that work poorly.

The work underway includes a field scan of what academic leadership already captures, a landscape of where that capture falls short, and a toolkit for senior leaders. In parallel, the group is planning a larger faculty survey, with data scientists, to catalog awards, exhibits, publications, performances, and other forms of creative and collaborative scholarship.

a2ru already keeps a Tenure and Promotion Policy collection and a reports and publications library. The tenure collection includes a reading list, a 2018 research brief, workshops, a canvas worksheet, and a member-only pool of external reviewers. The reports include SPARC interview syntheses, the arts-integration case, and the Michigan arts-data pilot. Academic Metrics points to that work and adds what the group is learning now about faculty activity systems. The aim is to document pathways to impact, so an exhibition is described on its own terms.

How the group works

  1. 1

    The Chair sets an agenda

Chairs serve renewable two-year terms. They set agendas, lead meetings, onboard members, coordinate scheduling, and plan succession.

  2. 2

The group works in the open

The group meets every second Wednesday at 3:00 p.m. EST / noon PST. Meetings produce research questions, decisions, and assignments. Guests may attend up to two meetings.

  3. 3

    The work accumulates

Summaries, findings, cases, and tools stay on this site so the group is more than a sequence of meetings.

  4. 4

    a2ru staff keep the infrastructure

Calendars, Zoom links, membership lists, and shared drives remain with a2ru. This site links to those resources instead of replacing them.

Expectations

  • Members contribute to an active agenda: questions, cases, tools, or review.
  • Guests are welcome twice. Ongoing participation is through a2ru membership.
  • Claims on this site distinguish survey results, interviews, cases, and hypotheses.
  • The Chair is responsible for succession, not only the next meeting.

Chair

Matthew S. Nolan, Faculty in Immersive Media Design in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Maryland. Chairs serve renewable two-year terms.
