Institutional landscape
Use, not a software review.
Campuses run Academic Analytics, Elements, Watermark, Interfolio, SciVal, Faculty180, homegrown tools, and local annual-review processes for different jobs. This page records what the Working Group can currently say about those uses.
Academic Analytics
In the preliminary Leadership Survey, Academic Analytics is commonly used for these purposes among responding institutions. That description is limited to the respondent set.
Documented uses
- Unit reporting
- Institutional reporting
- Awards
- Program review
- Benchmarking
Elements
Survey responses connect Elements heavily with annual review. The prototype case adds one anonymized account: annual evaluation alongside a CV and narrative, useful for grant tracking, and not known by the interviewee to be part of the final tenure decision.
Documented uses
- Annual review
- Grant tracking, in one anonymized account
- Institutions use faculty activity systems for different purposes.
- Adding categories may not solve the underlying problem.
- Structured data and narrative evidence may need to work together.

Documented uses
- Annual review
- Promotion and tenure

Homegrown systems
The survey establishes that institutions use a mix of platforms, including systems maintained locally. Specific homegrown practices are not yet documented here. Some respondents describe leaving centralized analytics when disciplinary differences make standardization difficult.

Internal annual-review systems
Annual review often depends on a local process in addition to a commercial platform. The Elements case is one example: the activity system, a CV, and a narrative are read together.
Documented uses
- Annual review
- Structured data and narrative evidence may need to work together.
- Institutions use faculty activity systems for different purposes.
